On Thursday, 7/13/2023, from 4:45 AM to 9:00 PM, our upstream Internet provider Lumen suffered a major, sustained outage. The outage disabled Internet access for hundreds of companies from Los Angeles up through Santa Maria.

Early in the outage -- by 10AM -- Lumen determined that the cause of the outage was a failed interface card in a core router in one of its downtown Los Angeles data centers. Unfortunately, due to a supply chain oversight, there was no spare card in stock at that data center. Lumen had to order a replacement card and have it delivered by courier, which didn't happen until 7PM.

Lumen has promised to provide an explanation of this oversight, and what measures it will take going forward to prevent a repeat failure. When that report is issued, we will reproduce the information on this status page.
